Legal requirements around emergency notification

While you may think your organization will be covered in the event of an emergency, do your methods of notifying people of an emergency truly cover all types of people who may use your building? For example, did you know there are estimated to be nearly 9 million people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing in the UK?

For those in charge of public spaces, this is an especially important point to note – as you never know, an emergency might strike when there are hard-of-hearing people or people with disabilities on your premises. To minimise the exposure of your organization, it’s important for ‘responsible persons’ to be up to speed with the following regulations and laws.

Please note, the following is just a high level guide to help you get started, on what is typically a large subject. If you have any specific questions, or would like to know more about anything in particular, please don’t hesitate to contact one of our experts.

Key regulations

BS 8300: Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people

These regulations ensure the design of buildings can cater for and include the specialized needs of disabled people.

Key legislation
